ربما لم تستمر الدورة الزمنية لجهاز Wii U مثلما حدث مع الجهاز الذي سبقه، وبعد أن اعلنت العديد من استديوهات الطرف الثالث توقفها عن تطوير الألعاب للجهاز بسبب أمكانياته المحدودة، انتشرت شائعات منذ فترة تؤكد عمل نينتندو على جهاز جديد يصدر بالأسواق في المستقبل القريب، وهي الشائعات التي عادت للظهور مرة أخرى اليوم مع الاشارة لأسم الجهاز ونظام التشغيل الذي سيستخدمه.

وفقا لأحدى الصحف اليابانية فالجهاز الجديد الذي سيكون خليفة Wii U يحمل أسم Nintendo NX حاليا وسيعمل بنظام التشغيل أندرويد، ومن غير المعروف ما إذا كان سيتم تعديل النظام ليصبح نظام تشغيل رئيسي لأجهزة الألعاب، أم المقصود هو العمل على نظام مشابه لما توافر مسبقا في أجهزة الألعاب المحمولة مثل Ouya، فأن كان كذلك فهذا يعني أن جهاز NX سيصدر بالأسواق بصفته جهاز محمول وليس كجهاز الشركة الرئيسي وخليفة Wii U.

التقرير أوضح ايضا أن اتجاه نينتندو لنظام اندرويد كان بسبب استقرار النظام وسهولة تطوير الألعاب له.
